Osteopathy is a philosophy, science and art of health management.
Term “osteopathy” was offered by an American surgeon Andrew T. Still (1828-1917) more than 130 years ago. Doctor formulated the main principles of osteopathy and developed a complex of special manual methods of diagnostics and treatment of a number of diseases.
Today osteopathy is a modern quickly developing school of medicine.
Osteopathy is based on fundamental medical sciences and on special knowledges of osteopathy, and is studied in higher American, European and Russian schools of osteopathy only after completion of a higher medical education. To become an osteopath doctor needs not only a talent, but also a deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology, histology and biomechanics of a human body.
Diagnostics and treatment in osteopathy are carried out by doctor’s hands. The hands of osteopath are extremely delicate and sensitive, versatile instrument that was created by the nature in itself. Special sensitivity of hands is gained by doctor-osteopath with the help of persistent trainings and allows doctor to detect the smallest, hardly noticeable disorders in patient’s body. It allows doctor to reveal and, therefore, to prevent developing of a disease in its very beginning, often at a stage that even the most modern equipment can’t detect.
Healthy organs and tissues have their own defined mobility, shape, density and temperature. With the help of sensitive fingers osteopath “reads” data about their condition, detects every change, physiological and functional disorders in patient’s body.
Osteopathic medicine examines a human in a context of a three-dimensional unity of musculoskeletal, neurovegetative and neuropsychic systems, which are constantly adapted to changing conditions of environment. Any kind of disorder in one of those three dimensions of human’s body will lead to changes in functioning of systems of a body, provoking so called osteopathic lesion, i. e. disease.
Very often patient feels the pain in one organ, but in reality the reason of this pain is in an absolutely different one. Osteopath’s task is to eliminate the reason of the disease, not its consequences. It is important for osteopath to define the initial cause of a disease and to eliminate it with the help of different osteopathic methods (manual, palpable, verbal, etc).
According to philosophy of osteopathy, human’s body has huge inexhaustible potentialities in self-correction and mobilization of inner strength.
Aim of the osteopathic treatment is restoring of physiological balance in patient’s body. It leads to normalization of metabolism and mobilization of inner potentialities in self-recovery of a body, and finally to improvement of patient’s quality of life.
The basis of osteopathy is manual methods of influence, but don’t mix up osteopathy with massage, manual therapy, bonesetting, chiropractic and other kinds of manual influence or especially with extrasensory methods. The only one thing they have in common is that the main doctor’s instrument is hands.
In spite of the name (“osteon” is the Greek for “bone”) interests of osteopathy are not confined to bone structure only. Osteopathy got much more farther of its predecessor – manual therapy. Osteopathy cures the whole body: musculoskeletal system, internal organs and central nervous system.
The main advantage of osteopathy over the other kinds of manual treatment is a gentle, smooth and sparing influence on a body. Having almost unlimited potential in diagnostics and treatment of a huge number of diseases, osteopathy has the least quantity of contraindications of treatment.
